Tips and questions
Something changing near you, a document you think we should read, or a question we should be able to answer and cannot.
editor@oakvilleiq.caCorrections
Something we published is wrong. Include the story and, if you have it, the document that shows the error.
corrections@oakvilleiq.caWhat makes a tip useful
The most useful tip is a pointer to a document. A file number, a meeting agenda item, a notice that arrived in the mail, a letter from a school board: any of those lets us go and read the record ourselves, which is the only basis on which we publish.
A tip does not have to be a document. Telling us that a study area map arrived for your street, or that hoarding has gone up on a site nobody has reported on, is enough for us to go and find the file. What we cannot use is a rumour with nothing behind it, because we will not publish one.
If you would rather not be identified, say so in your first message. We do not publish the identity of a person who sends us a tip, and we do not need your name to check a public document.
What we cannot help with
We are not the Town, the Region or a school board, and we cannot act on a service request, a tax question about your own property, a permit, or a school registration. Those go to the body concerned. Our sources page lists where each of them publishes, which is usually the fastest route to the right department.
We also do not provide property valuations, market commentary or advice about buying and selling. That is not what this publication is for.
What happens next
Every message is read. Corrections are answered first and, where we got something wrong, fixed the same day where we can. Tips are answered when we have something to say, which sometimes means after we have checked the record rather than immediately.
