A pocket of Joshua Creek is being moved back to its home school

What happened

At its meeting on 2 June 2026 the Halton District School Board's trustees approved a motion directing staff to begin a boundary review covering the southwest corner of Dundas Street East and Prince Michael Drive. The goal is to move that area from the Falgarwood Public School boundary into the Joshua Creek Public School boundary.

The board wrote to affected families on 4 June 2026. The formal motion, recorded in Board Report 26040, directs staff to initiate a review for Elementary Review Area 205, which the board defines as northeast Oakville east of Trafalgar Road and Morrison Creek, to integrate a pocket of development from the Falgarwood community into the Joshua Creek community.

Why the students were moved in the first place

The study area was one of the last new residential areas built out in that part of Oakville. When it completed, Joshua Creek Public School was under accommodation pressure and had required portables for several years, so the board directed new students from the area to Falgarwood Public School instead. It was a capacity decision, not a boundary judgement.

That pressure has since reversed. Board planning staff cite long-term enrolment and staffing projections showing declining enrolment at Joshua Creek Public School and a reduction in portable requirements, and on that basis recommend repatriating the students to their home school boundaries.

Why it matters

The process point is the one families should read closely. The board anticipates this review will follow its Pathway 2 process, which does not require a Boundary Review Committee made up of parent members. Under the board's administrative procedure a parent committee would normally be created in the autumn to work through options; under Pathway 2 the Boundary Review Steering Committee, made up of trustees, senior administration and planning staff, develops the options and takes them to a virtual public information session instead.

That is a lighter process, and the board's reasoning is proportionality: this is a small pocket returning to its home school rather than a redraw affecting thousands. It also means the window for structured parent input is narrower than in a typical boundary review, and the public information session is the main formal opportunity.

The board has signalled two mitigations. Changes are anticipated to be phased in over time, and existing students may be given the option to attend Joshua Creek if they request it, subject to transportation reviews. Neither is a guarantee in the material published so far.
