Towne Square closes for a year-long rebuild starting 14 September

What happened

The Town of Oakville will begin construction on the Towne Square Revitalization Project in the week of 14 September 2026. It is a $7.5 million reconstruction of the downtown square that has been the core's main gathering space for more than 35 years, and it is scheduled to finish in September 2027.

The work is phased deliberately. A holiday season pause is tentatively planned for November 2026, with work resuming, weather permitting, in the first quarter of 2027. The Millennium Tower Clock will be removed and placed in storage before construction begins, and returned when the work is complete.

What the square gets is amphitheatre-style seating for gatherings and events, a water feature, raised planters and seating areas, new trees and landscaping, an updated central lawn, decorative lighting and new accessible paving throughout.

Why it matters

Downtown Oakville's retail is small-format and independent, which makes it unusually sensitive to a year of construction outside the door. The Town's own framing acknowledges that: the phasing plan exists specifically to keep businesses accessible, and it was rebuilt after Council paused the project in October 2025 for additional consultation with businesses and the community.

The measures that follow from that pause are concrete rather than reassuring language. Construction staging and worker parking move off-site to reduce congestion in the core. Extended work hours are limited to when they are needed. Decorative hoarding surrounds active zones while maintaining designated entry and exit points, and wayfinding signage will direct visitors to open businesses. Access to the CIBC parking lot and Municipal Lot 3 stays open throughout.

The events calendar has already been rearranged around it. The Downtown Oakville BIA will still hold its annual Holiday Tree Lighting at Towne Square for the 2026 season, but plans to move its winter events to Centennial Square at 120 Navy Street.

What happens next

The single most disruptive item is still ahead. Closing George Street between Lakeshore Road East and Church Street from spring 2027 to the end of construction removes a block of the downtown grid for several months, and the Town's stated reason is to accommodate downtown events and activities elsewhere in the square while work continues.
